The ring main unit gas tank is a pressure component sealed with SF6 or environmentally friendly gas. Assembly precision and sealing quality directly determine product reliability. An electrical equipment manufacturer found that gas tanks were large and heavy, manual handling and positioning were difficult, assembly efficiency was low and there were safety risks. Taizhou Yufeng Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd. designed a gas tank assembly line for the customer, using lifting workstations and special slings to solve the assembly problems.
Project background
The customer mainly produces medium voltage switchgear and ring main units. Gas tank assembly used a traditional manual method with three problems: heavy handling of large tanks, inaccurate assembly positioning and no cycle management between processes. As orders grew, the customer wanted a standardized gas tank assembly flow to improve efficiency and consistency.
Solution
We planned a gas tank assembly line for the customer, equipped with lifting workstations. The workstation has lifting and rotating functions, allowing operators to adjust the tank height and angle for convenient installation of contacts, bushings and internal parts. Special slings transfer the tank smoothly from the conveyor to the station, reducing manual handling. The workstation is equipped with locating fixtures and torque tools, and assembly follows standard procedures.
Project results
After the line was in operation, gas tank assembly efficiency and consistency improved clearly. The lifting workstation reduced physical workload, locating fixtures guaranteed assembly precision, and cycle management between processes reduced waiting. The customer reported a shorter training period for new employees and more stable assembly quality, providing a foundation for larger orders.
Case experience
This case shows that large-part assembly projects do not need complex automation. Starting from three basic problems of handling, positioning and working posture can significantly improve assembly efficiency and safety. The key is to design tooling and auxiliary equipment according to product characteristics so operators complete standard work in the correct posture.
